Nostalgia

The late 80's!  For me having grown up then, I look back on it as a feel good era.  Some may disagree.  But as I hope to show, it was definitely an over the top era!  Below are several posters that I remember from that time.  Most, I just saw in the sports store in the Mall, but the last one I actually had on my wall.  I know these have made the rounds on the net, but I think they're worth another look.

They range from the ridiculous to the classicly ridiculous.  Check em out!

Up 1st is Bob 'Mad Dawg' Golic.  As you see, he is bad to the bone.  He's got his own fiery doghouse, the beware of Bob sign and luckily for the photographer, he's chained up!  What a cute doggie!  I wonder if Golic felt like a doofus doing this shoot or if he was as into it as he looks.

Time for a special delivery from the Mailman!  What a great nickname... at first.  I can't imagine that Karl has any love for it after all these years.  Too many goofy plays to be made on it, 2/3 of them probably about his 'package'.  He's delivering mail to 'The Boston's'??

OK, this one I really like, mostly because Eric Davis was a beast!  This still has the late 80's cheese to get into this post though!

Awesome!!  The outfit, the cavemanization of his name, the 'sacked' quarterbacks in the background... just ridiculous!  Mark seems to be into it though.

Kirk earned his name as a big game hunter with a single blast in the 88 World Series.  This poster, however, doesn't live up to the hype for 1 reason.  'Don't feed the pitchers'?  What does that even mean?  Shouldn't it be something about killing the pitchers or bagging a Relief Pitcher or something else!?!?  It's the pitchers that should be afraid of feeding Gibby, right?

And finally, the classic, the one on my wall.  I love this poster, but it's got a lot of goofiness to it.  Why do they each have their own home plate?  How about the irony that they are, if not lawbreakers, then at least steroid users?  Doesn't really work with this pic!  Gotta love the bats and the look though.

What are your favorite posters, 80's or otherwise?  Leave links in the comments!

Guess my Fitty Cent Auto

At a recent card show, one of my favorite dealers tossed me a baseball and asked "Who's autograph is this?"  I looked at it and replied "Catfish Hunter." "Sparky Lyle".  Cool, I was right!  He tossed me another and asked the same question but this time, he said he really didn't know.  I looked for a few minutes and first thought Orel Hershiser, but it's a great and distinctive auto, so it wasn't long before I came up with the correct answer.  Can you??

Show your knowledge!  No prize this time, just bragging rights.  I saw one of these exact inscriptions on Ebay for $109 Buy it Now!  I'm pretty sure that never sold even though that one came with a COA.

PS, the dealer gave me this one and the previously mentioned Catfish Hunter for 50 cents each!

'Wicked'ness = Happiness!

If you are reading this blog, you no doubt already know all about the 'Don' of the blogging scene, WickedOrtega of My Past Time...I Love it!  The man is known for awesome trading and cool hits!  I am also participating in an online card draft on his site starting Saturday.  Tune in and check it out!

A while back I send Wicked some Mantles for a friend of his and some random stuff.  The return package was this week's highlight!  Keep in mind that the pics below are only a part of what he sent.  There were more mini's, refractors, vintage, ToppsTown, oddballs, inserts, Cards Yo Mama Threw Out and more!  Check the stuff out.

First he threw out the complete set of 92 Leaf Gallery of Stars!  I've been slowly picking these out of dime boxes for years.  Now I have them all!  They are so Diamond King'y that I had to have them.

Here's a sampling of the kind of stuff that made up the bulk of the package.  Sorry my scanner cut some off.

I don't even know what this is, but once I figure out how to put it together, it will go in my work display!

My favorite o the bunch, directly off my wantlist!  George was a baaaaaaad man!  I love it!  Thanks for being wicked, Wicked!

Beckett Bashing - an experiment

**UPDATE** Closed!  The experiment didn't go off as well as I had hoped, but it was still fun.  Participants will be guaranteed a prize in my end of year contest!

<rules>
OK, I have been seeing ton's of people doing trade back the years on the Topps Diamond Giveaway site.  It usually works something like this:  I have a 1992 Robbie Alomar.  I want to trade it for a 1991 card, 1 year older.  Then trade that for a 1990 card and so on.  Seems pretty fun.  But I'm not on the Topps site.  I'm a blogger though!

That was my inspiration for a slightly different experiment.  Instead of going back a year, each trade will be for a card of higher book value.  And you are all eligible to trade!  This will be an attempt to prove that Beckett don't mean squat when it comes to trading!

To be clear, when this experiment comes to a close, the resulting card will be sold on Ebay and the proceeds will fund a contest for all who have participated.
I'm not trying to make a buck off you guys!

So here is how it works.  You see a card you like on this post (It will be sticky in the upper right by my want lists), you send me an e-mail saying you want it and what you are sending.  Then we trade via mail and your card goes up as the new card for trade.  If I go 2 weeks without any offers, I'll either trade one of my own for it or end the experiment.

Seeing how book value depends on condition, I'll rely on the honor system that cards sent in are in decent shape.  More allowances will be made for older cards, but the newer stuff should be sharp!

</rules>

Wanna see the current lot?????  Click it for a larger view.

2000 Bowman Carl Crawford.  Hi book value $1.
2008 Allen & Ginter Carl Crawford bat card.  Hi book value $10.
2008 Allen & Ginter Carl Crawford jersey card.  Hi book value $10.
2005 Turkey Red Carl Crawford White parallel.  High Book Value $3.
2007 Bowman Carl Crawford Orange parallel #/250.  High Book Value $3.
2006 Finest Carl Crawford X-Fractor #/d /250.  High Book Value $3.
1960 Topps Whitey Ford.   High Book Value $50, but condition is a factor, so let's call it $15.

Total Book value: $45.00

Any takers?  Comment below!!  Bonus offer: if you trade a single card for this lot, the 'price to beat' will be $30!!

Previous cards:
1. 1997 Metal Universe 'Platinum Portraits' Chipper Jones, number 5 of 10 cards in the set.  Hi book value $8.

2. 2004 Upper Deck Classic Combos #'d 1617/1999.  Hi book value $10, 2001 Topps Chrome Combos 'Heroes of Fenway'.  Hi book value $5, Total Book value: $15.00

Trade Post - Jon shoots me some Community Gum

Gotta love Blogger trades!  This one is from Jon at Community Gum.
First up are 3 beautiful Dennis Rodman's.  Dunno what it is about the Worm.  He doesn't fit my personality at all, but I love his cards, the gaudier the better!
Check these three out.  They look familiar, but strange at the same time?  I've seen tons of 92/93 UD in my life so it came as a surprise that these were out there.  They are a foreign issue from somewhere (Italy? Dunno) and have both languages on the back.  Awesome!
And, best for last, the G.O.A.T.!  I love 90's inserts and want all the cool shininess I can get, but it is usually Karl Malone or Charles Barkley or something.  Nobody parts with Jordan inserts!  Thanks Jon!

Calling all Blogger's! Eddie Murray alert!

OK, I read a nice post a while back talking about the great rookie cards from the late 70's.  The blogger who wrote the post mentioned that if anyone had a cut up Rickey Henderson RC or hammered Eddie Murray RC, they would like it.  So check it out!
Hammered enough?  I have tried to find that blog post, but I have about 100 blogs i read and can't pick it out.  So if the blogger who wrote the post comments here within the next 3 days and directs me to that post, I'll send the card out to them, no charge.  If I don't get any response from that specific blogger, then the 1st person to post a comment here will get it.  Either way, there will be a banged up HOF RC heading out to someone next week!

Trade Post - Sushi for me!

Spiegel at Nomo's Sushi Platter and I recently worked out a trade.  I sent him a Kirk Gibson relic and miscellaneous stuff and he sent me back a bunch of stuff from my wantlists!  Great trade, check out some of the highlights below:
Topps Laser are the beasts of the die cut world.  I wonder what machinery they used to make these?  The Name plates are sweet too, can't ask for better than 2 future HOF'ers!
Next we have a couple of serial numbered SPx cards.  The McGriff is /1000, decent for that old of card.  And as always, I love me some shiny!  All of these look MUCH better in person and getting a Nomo from Nomo is extra special!
The centerpiece!  My 1st Ozzie Smith relic!  The Wizard has always been one of my favorites.

Thanks again for the great trade Spiegel !

It'sa me, Donnie-o!

Some of you might have seen the Don Mattingly floating head that David from Tribecards sent me recently.  I put it up at work on the side of my computer.  All was glorious.  Work seems more bearable when Donnie Baseball is looking over your shoulder.  I wonder if that is how the Dodgers see it?

Anyway, I went away for vacation and when I came back, my co-workers had 'enhanced' Donnie's head with a little environmental ambiance!  Check it out!!

Yeah, we don't get much work done, or get paid squat, but we have fun!

I'm back!

Back from vacation (family reunion on the Oregon coast) and boy did I miss a lot! I had 433 items to read in my blog reader feed! I'm getting through them. I have a bunch of posts, trade and otherwise to get up soon, but right now, I'm plugging a 'card draft' being organized over at The Bullpen Cardboard. You send 15 cards and then draft from the cards others send. Sounds kinda fun.

Seeyasoon!

Real or not??

OK, at the last card show I hit, I picked up this non-sports card for basically nothing.  My research determined it to be a T59 - Flags of All Nations from 1910-11.  Aint she beautiful??
My question concerns authenticity.  What are the odds that this is really from 1910?  That'd make it my oldest card by quite a ways.  Comment away!

Two Rock Stars for the PC!

The other day I showed off a couple of old Basketball insert sets I am starting to collect (with much fear when it comes time to find the Jordan's).  Today I got 2 more from one of the sets, 97/98 Topps Rock Stars!!  Can you guess which is the refractor?  It's a toughie!!  The non-refactor actually looks a lot better in real life.

If you've got any of these and want to trade, let me know!!  Especially the Jordan's!  So far I have these two, the Tim Hardaway and the Refractor version Dennis Rodman.  I'm interested in both the base and refractor sets.

Where I get my fashion tips...

When I was detailing the rhinotruckload of cards that Smed sent me a while back, I missed what may be my favorite card he sent.  Check it out!!

The manliest of all relief pitchers (and they are a manly bunch!), O-PEE-CHEE to boot!  I love the glasses too, they really add to the mystery that is Kent.  Another great touch is that he is a 'Pitcher/Lanceur'!  If anyone has a relic card of Mr. Tekulve, I'd love to trade!

I pimp therefore I am

Thanks to all the awesome bloggers that pimped up my contest a while back.  Now that I am an 'established' blogger, I get to do the same for others.  So get on over to Jaybarkerfan's Junk and check out his contest!

He's got 9 prizes already!  Leave a comment saying I sent you and I get an extra entry!

Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed, Greed!

Trade Post - I love Dimwits edition!

I contacted The Dimwit from The Daily Dimwit last weekend about a trade and we came to a quick agreement.  I got my loot today, so I hope Sam gets his soon!  Great trade, I love what I got.  You'll have to keep an eye out on his blog to see what I sent him.  Here's the stuff!
Thome is one of those classy guys.  Lately I've heard comparisons to Harmon Killebrew.
This may look like an ordinary G.Q. Gonzalez, but it is actually the Leather version and numbered /10!  It has a good texture to it and is also my first A-gon on the Red Sox!

One, Two, Princes kneel before you!  That's what I said now!  If you aren't old and weird, that's a Spin Doctors reference!  Prince Albert and Prince Fielder, which will be a Cubbie next year?  Great card!
And THE card of the trade ( at least for me)!  Musial is one of my all time faves and though he doesn't get the acclaim of Mantle, Mays, Aaron and others, in my opinion, he is a top 10 all time great.  Thanks for the awesome trade!!

Terrible graphics post

My scanner makes cards look like cardboard!  Not the good kind, the corrugated kind.  My camera stinks too.  Now that I need actual graphics, I might have to invest in something better, but today you must suffer! Through! My! Terrible Graphics Post!

My apologies to David at Tribecards because the terrible graphics are of cards from his Buck a Box Break!

I had the Yankees because... I have no idea.  The Bombers are always taken soon after breaks open, so it seemed like an opportunity.  I got rookies, the standard Yankees retired guy and the Captain along with 2 awesome Mattingly throw ins!  The button and the creepy floating mustachio'd head will likely be added to my Push the Boss to his sports limits work experiment.  They will add a nice flair! Thanks David!!

Card(s) of the Day

I saw a copy of the Barkley at a card show a while back for $40 and decided I wanted the set.  That'l never happen, Jordan is in the set, but I finally got my first (for a lot less than $40.  Whew!).  Also in the pic is a Topps 'Rock Stars' Tim Hardaway.  This is another set I'm trying to collect.  Easier than the Big Man on Court set, but I'm sure it will take me a while.  I think these sets are on my wantlists, but if not, send em my way anyway!!

Card Show show and tell

OK, I ht our monthly card show this morning for a quick visit.  I spent all my money, so hopefully I got something good right??  Well, since 'all my money' comes out to be $18, you aren't going to see any Babe Ruth cut auto's, but I did make off with some stuff I like.  Mostly I spent my time at a dime box, but here are a few more interesting finds.

Cesar Cedeno relic?!?!?  Awesome!  I love relics of retired players like Dawson and Gibby, but Cedeno?  Ridicucool!

This is stamps from 1982.  Vintage!!!  Well, maybe not, but they are pretty cool and I got them for about their face value!

Contests everywhere - Fuji edition

Check out the contest at Chronicles of Fuji!  It should keep us all busy for a while!

Hockey anyone??

OK, I love Baseball cards.  I really like Basketball and Football cards.  I never got into Hockey cards. But being the accumulator that I am, I get Hockey from time to time.  Below is a 89-90 O-Pee-Chee Hockey complete set and a smattering of other hockey, most of which I recognize by name.  The set has a Sakic RC and a Fleury RC.  I am recently bankrupted by postage for the contest and trades, but if anyone wants these cards and can pay me postage, they're yours, no trade required.  Leave a comment to claim them and e-mail me your address.  They gotta go!

Card Show Saturday!

Christmas comes but once a year, but across the river from me in Portland OR, my own personal Christmas comes once a month!  Card show!!!  OK, this is not a card show like many of you get with nice crowds and tons of tables.  It's at an older Mall and runs through the middle of the walkway.  There are about 20 dealers most months, usually the same guys.  But hey, it's a CARD SHOW!!  I am what financial advisors call 'poor', so I look at the cool stuff, but I always end up at a couple of dealers that have cheapo boxes.  They are both great guys but have opposite philosophies on how to sell.

Dealer 1 has TONS of stuff, organized by price.  He starts at one end of his tables with 1/2 off Beckett boxes and moves gradually through dollar boxes to quarter boxes to dime boxes and on some occasions, even penny boxes.  I spend a lot of time here, always talking with the dealer.  We have become friends.  A few months ago, I asked him if he had any Wes Welker.  He didn't know who he was!  But over the next few months, he remembered and looked specifically for Welker for me.  The last 2 shows, he has shown up with Welkers and given them to me for free!  Great guy, I'll always spend at his tables.

The other guy is right next to the first one. He is a Vietnam Vet and always has wierd and entertaining stories to tell.  His low end boxes are unpriced.  If anyone ever asks him how much, he just says 'cheap!'.  At first that turned me off, I want to know how much I will be paying for a card before I decide if I want it.  After several months of just passing by the guy, I finally found some cards that I couldn't pass up at his table.  I presented him with a short stack and asked how much.  After his obligatory 'cheap' response, he gave me a price that was just silly low.  I grabbed the cards, threw money at him and ran out the door!  I have been a customer ever since.  the deals vary, but I always look.

I have grabbed cards for several bloggers from these 2 guys in the past including Dave at Tribecards, WickedOrtega, and Smed.  Now that I am becoming more a part of the community, I hope that will continue.  So the show is Saturday!  Stay tuned to see what I get.

I'd be interested in knowing about your experiences at shows.  What do you look for, how good are the shows and dealers?

Price guide discrepancy and Contest Pimpage!

Hey blogosphere!  First up is some publicity for This Card is Cool's newest contest.  Looks fun, go check it out!  Oh, and so is buckeyestatecards!  Here's that link.  Ok, I could use some help from the all knowledgeable and wise among you!  Check out the card below.  As far as I can tell, it is a 2002 Fleer Fall Classics 'Rival Factions' Insert (the curvy banner underneath the word Fleer says 'Fall Classics').  The plastic it came in had a price tag of $40, and when I look it up, it looks like it books for $25.  But the book also says that it should be #'d /50.  As you can see, mine has no serial number.  Anybody know what I have?  Anyone want it?  I don't really care its 'value', I just want to know if it is hard to find or some junk insert that nobody cares about.

Contest Winners!!!

OK, here's the results!  You can watch the actual randomization, or scroll past it and just read the text version:

Sorry about the quality, I'm new at this and will get better.

Last chance!

Contest closes tonight at 11PM Eastern/8PM Pacific!  Last chance to enter! is closed!  Winners will be announced tomorrow!

Work is about... well, not work.

Hey, am I posting from work?????  Could be, hard to tell, but I do have something work-related to share.  I work in a standard office environment, strangled by the cubicles and the color beige.  So Iv'e decided to spruce things up a bit with sports oddball items.  Here's the beginning of my effort:

Click the pic for a larger view

Yep, that's pop-outs from 1985, 86 and 87 Donruss.  I think they came in Jumbo packs or something.  And for those of you with eagle eyes, yes, that is a popout of me in the center!!  Yup, that's the Diamond King in his work league softball uniform!  My cubicle mate made it for me after I brought in the others.  If you look close, you can even see that he made the softball flying toward my mitt pop out!  Good work!

So, I guess I'm open to oddball stuff that would show good at work.  Until the bosses shut me down of course!  If you have stuff you think I should display, e-mail me!

Trade with 'My Sports and Sports Cards'

I recently completed a trade with Jeff of My Sports and Sports Cards fame.  I sent him a few Tom Seaver's and White Sox cards.  He responded with a smackdown of sweet stuff!

He started it off with a couple relics both #'d to 100.  A guy who claims to never have done steroids and another who probably could have used some.  For recovery reasons only, of course.

Then he followed that up with Gypsy Queen and Ichiro studliness.  I may have to start looking for more Ichiro's, those are sweet.

A great trade!  Thanks so much Jeff!

Smed, cards and back surgery...

Smed recently held a spring cleaning where he generously offered bunches of cards in return for shipping and stuff off his wantlists.  I jumped in for the Pirates, Nationals and 2010 Heritage.  What I got was a severely strained back!!  Smed sent not 1, not 2, but 3 boxes of cards  my way!  There must have been 2000 cards!  Anyway, it was a ton of fun going through them, reliving memories ans checking out sets I never had any of before.  Here's a few of my favorites...

Bunches of 70's coolness (and a little O-Pee Chee)

Barry (post roids, looks like), the Bird, tiny Honus and a McCutchen insert

Ooooohhhh, shiny!

Rockies coolness!  Carlos seems to have the wrong uni on...

Believe it or not, these are my first Strasburg Rookies!!!  1 Year late!

Only slightly less surprising, here is my first Harper RC

There was tons more too!  Thanks a bundle Smed, stuff is on the way!!!

Question: What card under $20 have you always wanted, but never got?

My grandma was a saint.  I don't make that claim because she gave me cookies or was a foster parent or any of the other awesome things she did.  She was a saint because of what she didn't do.  She didn't throw out her son's baseball cards!

Because of that, as a kid, I always looked forward to the 2 hour drive to grandma's so I could see 'old' baseball cards.  She had a few hundred cards from the very late 50's to the mid 60's.  I remember a 62 Willie Mays and a cereal box cutout card of Sandy Koufax, but most were just junk.  I think my uncles got ripped off a lot!

The card I remember most and always have looked for is a 1964 Topps Rusty Staub.  This card was my introduction to the Houston Colt 45's, precursor to the Astros.  It was also awesome in my mind because of the HUGE rookie cup!  I didn't find out until years later that it wasn't even his RC.

So I've been looking for this card for 30 years.  There's a 1964 Topps 'guy' at the little monthly show I go to, but he never has this one.  It only books for $15 I think.  So that's my card under $20 Iv'e always wanted but never got.  What's yours??

Registry of team/player collectors...Your Opinion Please!

OK, so I was wondering if a registry of Team/Player collectors is something that would be useful.  We all know that Night Owl collects Dodgers and Tribecards and Baseball Dad collect Indians.  Plenty of others are well known too.  But what if I found 45 Dave Kingmans in my closet.  I hate throwing stuff away if there is someone who would appreciate it.

So this is how I envision it... You self-sign up.  Nobody goes into the registry unless they want to.  You can register for up to 2 teams and 5 different players.  If you are a blogger, the registry would link to your blog, then people would get in contact with you through it.  If you don't have a blog, it would have to be an e-mail link I guess.

It would not be the way most trades get done, that would surely stay the way it is now, but it could be a clearing house to help people get rid of good cards to better homes.

So leave your thoughts in the comments!  Is this a good/bad idea?  Why?  Does this already exist in some form?

Contest - College Baseball?!?!?!?

College World Series!  Why don't this get the same attention that March madness gets?????  Could be because there aren't any last second shots in baseball.  (Christian Laettner?)  Anyway, there is one way to up it's popularity, and that's to GET INVOLVED!

How do I get involved, you ask?  The very best way I know of is to join the CWS Contest over at Autographed Cards.  Here's the direct link.

Please guess poorly, cause I wanna win!

Send some love!

Gary Carter has cancer.  This isn't news, but it is very sad.  I was a lukewarm fan of Carter's.  I loved his funky clown hair sticking out of those awesome Expos hats.  To the point!  Babble over at 30 Year Old Cardboard has started an initiative i can really get behind.

Go check it out!!  I'll be sending a card, I hope you will too!
