The term 'Veep' generally refers to the Vice President, mostly thanks to the Julia Louis-Dreyfus show on HBO.
But today it means MVP! Yes, the MVP's were announced, and usually I wouldn't think to post about such a thing, but it just so happens that I recently acquired cards of both of the new Veeps! So I thought I would show them off. Nothing 'special'. They could both probably be found in quarter bins. But I didn't have an Abreu RC, and my Freeman collection is sadly lacking as well. So I grabbed these two!
Both seemed like deserving candidates. I'm sure that cases could be made for others, But I'm not as invested in the voting as I once was, so I'm perfectly happy. On another note, it makes me sad, looking at Ebay and COMC that there are so many different RCs of current players. Somehow, it makes the RC a little less special to me. And I love RCs! It kind of bugs me that many RCs are basically commons, only the low numbered or 'special' seem to be in demand, or command decent money. But I'm OK with the 'low end' Abreu RC. I do have a slightly better Freeman RC, but not the one I want. The one I want is for my 2011 Topps Chrome refractors set. Yikes! That one will set me back a bunch if I ever actually get one.
What do you think of the MVP selections?
What is your opinion on the current state of rookie cards?
You can make an argument that neither of them deserved it. Betts in the NL and LeMahieu in the Al. But I think those are the four guys.
ReplyDeleteRCs probably mean less than they used to. More card sets, so it's easier to focus on card designs / photos you like. Auto cards, relics, limited SNs are all special, so the RC doesn't have the market cornered anymore. RCs of Hall of Famers or a collector's favorite player should still stand out though.
Yeah, things always change and old men like me complain about it. I kind of would have liked seeing LeMahieu win, I like high average guys. But I don't have a LeMahieu RC to show off!
DeleteFeel like the Yankees and Dodgers got screwed in the MVP vote, but I’m ok with that.
ReplyDeleteI don’t like the state of rookie cards. It felt nice back in the day to have pulled a rookie like a Prospects card or a Draft Pick in the ‘’90’s. Even in like 2000, when Troy Glaus was hot or in ‘98 with JD Drew, you would’ve at least had a chance to pull their Leaf Rookies and Stars SP rookie. Now everything is just so overpriced and scarce that you don’t even have a chance to pull THE rookie card of someone.
Let’s say you got lucky and were able to purchase a box of 2015 Bowman Chrome and pull an autograph of Fernando Tatis, Jr. Well, that’s great, but a flipper pulled the X-Fractor autograph that had stiff odds, and some corporate executive purchases 10 cases and pulled the Superfractor.
I like how Topps Update rookies have developed some value, but unless you pull that once-in-a-lifetime Superfractor or some printing plate, you will never know the feeling of owning THE top rookie card like you would if you owned the ‘90 Leaf Sosa or ‘85 Topps McGwire or 92 Bowman Piazza.
You know, this isn't the first time that I have written some stuff in a post, only to have a commenter say it way better than I did!
DeleteI was fine with it. I expected Freeman to win. Honestly, I paid very little attention to the AL. Didn't even know Abreu had a good year.
ReplyDeleteI go back to when a rookie card was one Rickey Henderson and that was it. So don't ask me to explain it.
I'm glad Jose Abreu and Freddie Freeman won. I like both guys. As for the current status of rookie cards... it's cool seeing our hobby shine after spending a few decades losing new blood to video games and social media. I wish this new blood weren't a bunch of "investors", but who knows... maybe some of them will become collectors. I know I went through a phase back when I was a kid when I "invested" my allowance in cards. 30 years later... I'm a collector having fun.
ReplyDeleteAs for defining what a rookie card is... that's just insane. Is it a 1st Bowman? The official RC logo? What about the cards in between the 1st Bowman and RC logo? So many different opinions. If I can afford it, I usually try to add the 1st Bowman. But that's just me. Miss the days of just having one, two, or three rookie cards to collect.
Deletealso add in cards like Pro Debut & Prizm Draft so hard to know what a rookie card is anymore kinda like a foul in basketball or PI or Holding in Football lol
DeleteI wish Abreu was more consistent. I have a small, unintentional stash of his RCs. Any rookies in my collection these days are gifted or pulled. I don't buy them at all. Too many choices and I never choose wisely.
ReplyDeleteI was fine with the selections. I have been sitting on Abreus for years for trade bait but was waiting for him to make a leap before trying to do so. Maybe this will help lol
